Black Bean Soup 2023

Digging in the outside deep freeze I found two containers of black bean soup. Spicy soup. Three cans black beans, one can Rotel tomatoes, onion, celery, garlic, cumin, chili powder, chicken broth. The one recipe I make pretty often where I get to use the immersion blender.

Spicy White Bean and Tomato Soup

Experimenting. I had four cans of Covid Great Northern beans with a best by date of this summer. My usual spicy bean soup is with black beans, pinto beans, red beans. I did not put chipotle peppers in this version so not quite as spicy. One can diced tomato. One can Rotel tomato. One big onion, one big celery stalk, two cloves garlic. One heaping teaspoon cumin, one heaping teaspoon chili powder. Cayenne, bay leaf, black pepper, Greek seasoning, splash of green hot sauce. And chicken broth. Simmer for about an hour to an hour and a half. Will update the finish.

Spicy Beans and Hot Okra

A real man's breakfast. Impulse buy at Albertsons. Had a couple of spicy beans last night with a turkey sandwich. They were good and crunchy. The hot okra I've had before.

Pork Chop and Spicy Three Bean Soup

Last pork chop. Leftover rice for the bean soup not pictured. Freezer is pretty full and I also have a chest freezer out in the garage now.

Spicy Three Bean Soup

Needed to use up some Covid canned goods. This is a recipe I created during Covid. Easy and spicy. Several different versions but this one has two cans red beans, two cans black beans, drained and rinsed. One can pinto beans. Not drained. Two cans Rotel tomatoes. Two chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, chopped. One little can of peppers will make three things of soup. I freeze the rest. One big onion, three cloves garlic, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, black pepper, salt. One tablespoon chili powder. One tablespoon cumin. Chicken broth and water.

Cook the onions and garlic for a few minutes and then add the chipotle peppers for a couple minutes more. Add Rotel tomatoes and simmer for a few minutes. Add the beans, chicken broth, chili powder, cumin, all the seasoning, bay leaf. Simmer for about an hour to an hour and a half. That's it. I eat it with rice as filler with Extra Toasty Cheez-Its. Also good with a toasted taco shell broken up in it.

Red Beans with Easter Ham Bone

Big ham bone. I had two pounds of dried red kidney beans in the pantry and two big onions so this is a double batch. Lots of chopped onion. More pics as I go along. I am pre-boiling the beans now before starting the real cooking. The water turns black so this step is to remove impurities and it makes for a smoother finished dish.

Spicy Three Bean Soup

Woke up at midnight and worked on drafts for both sites while listening to the new Trailers From Hell podcast. Then made bean soup for the freezer for the first time in a while while listening to older Trailers From Hell podcasts I hadn't heard. I was living on this soup last year with Extra Toasty Cheez-Its. The perfect accompaniment. I made crawfish etouffee for Mother's Day lunch at my mother's and had enough left over to freeze a bit.

Three Bean Salad

From the Kinja food files.
Goes good with smoked or grilled meats. One can red kidney beans (low sodium), one can pinto beans (low sodium), one can navy beans (couldn’t find the low sodium). Drain and rinse. Purple onion, celery, green onion. Dressing with creole mustard, olive oil, cider vinegar. It needs to sit in the fridge a while to let the flavors meld.

Black Bean Soup

This old Kinja bean soup recipe had a bunch of old pics of the kitchen and garage. And Magnum P.I. in the comments. One of the very earliest Cooking With Wu posts.

A quick, relatively simple, and spicy recipe. Note: if you have more time there is nothing wrong with starting out with dry beans and homemade stock. I make this recipe regularly because it is easy and it freezes well

White Beans with Easter Ham Bone

Soaking grocery store beans certainly helps but is not totally necessary. Freshly dried beans that you may find at a farmer's market don't have to be soaked at all and still cook quicker. What I do with white beans is boil them for 20-25 minutes first, until the water turns yellow, and then drain them and go from there. Full recipe at the link and post will be updated as I get more into it.

https://thegoldenhornblog.blogspot.com/2020/12/white-beans.html

Just coming to a boil here with some celery and onion tops. I will pick that stuff out too when I drain the beans, then brown the ham, then cook the vegetables, and then add the beans back with some chicken stock/broth.
