In attempting to figure out Peter Ridley-Smythe's plan, several classic movies are mentioned - The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Treasure of the Sierre Madre (1948), North by Northwest (1959), Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), King Soloman's Mines (1950, the Stewart Granger version), Raiders of Ghost City (1944), The Perils of Pauline (1947), and Perils of Nyoka, aka "Nyoka and the Lost Secrets of Hippocrates" (1942). A brief clip from Perils of Nyoka is seen on Magnum's TV at the end.

- The seldom seen "computer room" at Robin's Nest is used for the amusing opening scene. The space computer game that Magnum is seen playing, "Siege of the Seventh Galaxy", is fictional. Similiar to the "Dungeon Master" game seen in "Little Games" (5.12), the game graphics seen on-screen are not from a real game. It is actually a mock animation sequence made to look like a real computer game. Interestingly, the computer game cover that is briefly seen in the episode is identical to the now classic 1986 space exploration role-playing game Starflight, but with the words "Starflight" replaced with "Siege of the Seventh Galaxy".

Based on the final scene, the events of Magnum's dream are based on a story he recently wrote called Murder by Night, his first attempt at fiction writing.

Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Erle Stanley Gardner, Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are "name-checked" by Higgins (in Magnum's dream).

There has been a persistent rumour for years that James Garner was originally pencilled in to make a cameo as Jim Rockford in this episode, but due to a dispute with Universal, the idea never came to fruition.

John D. MacDonald's 1962 novel A Flash of Green is seen on a nightstand in Magnum's hotel room. John D. MacDonald is one of the greatest mystery writers of all-time! In other episodes, Magnum is seen with books of Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler

Higgins uses a Sony Betamax video recorder to tape the snooker games. At the time this show aired Sony's Beta was quickly losing to JVC's VHS tape system

Magnum: When I was fourteen years old, my grandfather took me crabbing. Now, crabbing's a lot different from trout fishing. See, you tie the bait on the line, you drop it in the water, and when you feel the crab crawl up on the bait, and start nibbling away, you have to slowly raise the line to the surface and then net him as fast as you can. The only trouble is, by the time you can see the crab, he can see you. And nine times out of ten, he'll scuttle right back off that bait and disappear into the ocean. Now I guess that's what I always liked about it, the crab had as good a chance of a free meal as you did. But the best thing about crabbing, was that it taught you patience, concentration, and the second sense of when the time was right to sit, and wait it out. (Narration)

Universal Studios plugs its own cartoon Woody Woodpecker during this episode. Magnum is seen watching "Woodpecker in the Rough" (from 1952) in his hotel room.
