What a country! New 1981.
Directed by rat bastard Elia Kazan. Richard Widmark, Jack Palance, Zero Mostel. Plague in New Orleans. Notable for authentic New Orleans accents in some scenes featuring locals. Contrast that with every Hollywood southern accent you've ever heard. I found this DVD at Big Lots! Beautifully shot by Joseph MacDonald. There are some great scenes with Palance and Mostel. I am listening to one of the pandemic podcasts (#4) at Trailers From Hell, and this is one of the movies listed, along with with one of my favorites, Pickup on South Street. There are some creative people whose personal issues you can get past and some you cannot. Kazan for me is one I cannot.

My first published photograph. Unearthed while clearing some bookshelves to make room for more movies. This was an assignment on old churches in Pointe Coupee Parish for a regional magazine. I had another photo in the same spread.
On Kinja I somewhat infamously stated that I would like to feed Jodorowsky and Tarkovsky to pigs because of their history of abusing animals on film. I am going to repeat that statement here as an illustration of how strongly I feel about the subject. I was just listening to Joe Dante talk about The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936) on the Trailers From Hell podcast, where director Michael Curtiz killed dozens of horses in the course of filming the charge scene. A scene so notorious it led to the banning of trip wires and other abuses on film. Errol Flynn was allegedly so upset with what happened that he jumped Curtiz.
Here is my statement: If you have to abuse or kill an animal in order to film a scene in your movie, you have failed as an artist, you have failed as a filmmaker, you have failed as a human being. You are a piece of shit.
lightninglouie had a good line in the comments where he had an interviewer speaking to Jodorowsky who says something like, "And then what happened?" Jodorowsky - "And then he feed us to pigs." Interviewer - "Ah, yes."
I always stop in the grocery famous for their chicken salad when I have to go to the hospital lab or doctor's office. They also make good pimento cheese. Have some Zapp's Salt & Vinegar chips too. The only time I buy potato chips. I also like the Zapp's No Salt. I've made homemade pimento cheese using the Joy of Cooking recipe but the pros are better.

Gilbert is already singing.
Tony, Emmy, Grammy and 8-time Oscar winning composer Alan Menken joins Gilbert and Frank to talk about the marriage of screen music and images, the demise (and resurrection) of movie musicals, the genius of the late, great Howard Ashman, and the "architecture" of songs like "Be Our Guest," "I See the Light," "Part of Your World" and "Somewhere That's Green." Also, Danny DeVito mimics Jimmy Durante, Steve Martin plays a sadistic dentist, Brad Garrett and Jeffrey Tambor perform a "want" song and Alan praises the talents of John Williams, Thomas Newman and Lin-Manuel Miranda. PLUS: "Fantasia"! The comedy of Randy Rainbow! "I'll Do Anything"! Alan wins a Razzie! And Bob Dylan turns down "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"!
1976 ABC. Carl Reiner. I just found a 16mm ep. of this on Youtube with some other rare 70s stuff (Bookmarks XI.) 13 episodes.
Another one of those Free with Ads movies on Youtube. (No ads with blocker.) Peter Falk. A favorite. For a long time you could only find a full screen version. This looks like a good widescreen print. Neil Simon. A companion piece with Murder By Death. Good cast. Recommended.

Finding things I wanted to save after the fact is often difficult. Especially now with two sites and two open threads full of crap.

Second woman admitted to the Director’s Guild. Reportedly took over for Nicholas Ray for several days on On Dangerous Ground when he became ill. The Hitch-Hiker (1953) was the first noir directed by a woman. I watched it on Youtube (it is public domain) and it was very intense.

Another Cheers reference. Early Harry the Hat appearance, Coach calls Harry a flim-flam, and Harry accuses Sam of running a clip joint.

It was snowing during one of the old Kinja tomato sauce recipes. We may have an ice storm coming on Monday for Mardi Gras. All pics after the break are from the old version. I didn't have any vodka so that is missing in this one as well.

Show business historian and New York Times bestselling author KLIPH NESTEROFF returns to the podcast for an entertaining and (as always) educational discussion about banned cartoons, politically incorrect mascots, the history of Hollywood stereotypes and his new book on Native Americans and comedy, "We Had a Little Real Estate Problem." Also, Buddy Hackett pulls a knife, Howard Hawks disses Rowan & Martin, Peter Sellers sends up Charlie Chan and Frank Sinatra's goons rough up Shecky Greene. PLUS: "Go Go Gophers"! Alan Hale's Lobster Barrel! Allen & Rossi "inspire" Charlie Hill! Jack Carter feuds with Al Jolson! And "F-Troop" rips off a Redd Foxx routine!
