The Steel Helmet (1951)
Another Korean War movie, this time by Samuel Fuller (directed, written, and produced by). Different tone than Anthony Mann's Men in War, but similar in that it's not a bullshit John Wayne propaganda film. Standout performance is from WWII vet Gene Evans, playing Sgt. Zack. Thought I recongnized him from something: MASH episode "Blood and Guts".

Good Korean War movie with an unusual tone, almost is if it were directed by Rod Serling, but there's no Twilight Zone weirdness. Probably due to western influence on Mann's style.

CBS 1981-89. I was going to order the whole series on DVD but Amazon says it is unavailable. They have single seasons. I have watched almost all of the other 80s detective/action shows like Remington Steele, Moonlighting, etc. A lot of Magnum promos here too since they ran back to back for almost the whole time.

Apple CEO Tim Cook killed off a television show being developed about Gawker Media, according to a report by the New York Times’ Ben Smith that raises questions about the influence that Big Tech has on media.
The show was supposed to be about the rise and fall of Gawker’s group of websites had played a major role in the online culture wars of the last decade or so, including Gamergate, exposes of celebrity sex scandals, and the defamation lawsuits that brought the media company to its knees.
According to Smith, the show had a number of former top Gawker execs involved and had already filmed several episodes when Cook got wind of it.

Chicken and Sausage Gumbo
First make a roux. Gumbo recipe. Another needed saving from Kinja. This one will have lots of extra pics and the Chicken Rocket because I did it several times.
1 whole chicken
1 lb. smoked sausage
1 cup each - chopped onion, bell pepper, celery
3-4 cloves garlic
1/4 cup chopped parsley
1 beer (optional) - half in Chicken Rocket, half in gumbo
1 quart chicken stock (approx.)
Bay leaf, cayenne, pinch of thyme, salt, black pepper

1 lb. ham chunks (cut into cubes)
1-2 quarts chicken stock
1 ham bone or ham hock
2 medium onions, 3 stalks celery, half a large bell pepper, and 3-4 cloves garlic (chopped)

Green onion (optional)

Big Ed's and The Golden Horn
Attempted recreation of the Big Ed's post where all the links to Kinja are dead. This was the bar in Culver City which became The Golden Horn in Barfly (1987).

Big Ed’s bar, once a meeting place for screen stars, gamblers and prostitutes in the 1940s and 1950s, will probably be demolished next year so Culver City officials can redevelop a blighted block in the downtown area.
Some say that stars like Gordon MacCrea and Joan Crawford from the old RKO Studios across the street stopped by on occasion in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s. And legend has it that a tunnel ran under Main Street to the Culver Hotel, where patrons went for trysts.
Big Ed’s, originally built in 1927 as a drug store, was converted to a restaurant and bar in 1944 and became one of about eight cocktail lounges in Culver City within a block of RKO (now Laird International Studios).
“It was a fairly loose town (then),” said former City Councilman A. Ronald Perkins, who patrolled the bar as a Culver City policeman in the early ‘50s.
“It appeared to be nothing but gas stations and bars,” he said. “And it was pretty much who you knew and who you didn’t know that made the difference. There was considerable bookmaking in the town. The movie industry didn’t have too good of a reputation. The stars and studios kind of ran Culver City for years.”
For Big Ed Schwartz the bar’s freewheeling past is long gone.
Schwartz, dressed in a black cowboy outfit, peered out of the swinging doors to his bar one lazy afternoon.
Behind him, a half-dozen middle-aged customers sat hunched over their drinks in silence, except for an occasional hoarse laugh or cough. Tex Ritter’s country classic “Rye Whiskey” played on the juke box. Sporting a white goatee, string tie, gold necklace and bifocals, Schwartz, 62, pondered his future as a bar owner.
