Casablanca (1942)

Directed by Michael Curtiz. Humphrey Bogart. DVD coming up next. Properly formatted. I don't have a lot of classic movies that aren't genre films but I grabbed a cheap copy of Casablanca for just such an occasion as this.

Payback (1999)

Directed by Brian Helgeland. Director's Cut DVD. Mel Gibson. Parker by Donald E. Westlake. Same book as Point Blank (1967). This cut is quite a bit different. And better. It's a meaner cut. David Paymer, Maria Bello, Bill Duke, John Glover, William Devane. Kristofferson is in one cut, not the other.

A Note on Aspect Ratios

For some reason the new Vizio TV on some DVDs will not let me change the aspect ratio to square. I was about to watch Casablanca, nice two disc special edition, two commentaries, but I flat refuse to watch Casablanca stretched for a widescreen TV. Same thing happened with the X-Files DVDs. Can't watch it stretched, I ended up watching those in the downstairs bedroom on the big old analog TV. That is what I am going to have to do with Casablanca.

No Beer, No TV, Heat Turned Up to 80

Cheers - Thanksgiving Orphans. Season five, ep. six. First aired Nov. 27, 1986. Best Thanksgiving episode ever.

Turkey links for the day below:

Norm: No, I can't make it this year.

Sam: Why not? I mean, we never even met Vera.

Carla: Yeah.

Norm: No, we gotta go to Vera's mother's. Such a drag. No beer, no TV, heat turned up to 80.

Cliff: That's all right, Normie, you know. You gotta do what your little wifey wants you to do. You either got 'em or you don't.

Norm: All right. You know somethin', Cliff, you're absolutely right. Eight years I've been goin' to that old bat's house. I think Vera owes me one, all right? I'm gonna march into that house. I'm just gonna say, "Vera, this year we're goin' to Carla's for Thanksgiving. That's the last I wanna hear on the subject."

Cliff: Hey, all right!

Carla: Good for you, Norm. Okay, Norm's out.

Poppin' Fresh Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls Commercial (1979)

This is my new indulgence. I grabbed several of the five packs the other day. Still no sausage biscuits at the grocery. I don't eat a lot of breakfast food but when I wake up very early I am quickly starving.

Upperseven (1966)

AKA The Spy with Ten Faces. Directed by Alberto De Martino. First pick in the new Eurospy Youtube channel I found. I watched all of the others in the previous channel, which was excellent. Not a lot written about this genre, so it is hard to know the good from the bad. The Golden Horn now has a respectable number of both Eurospy and Spaghetti Westerns. 17 now Eurospy, 19 Spaghettis.

Sledge Hammer! - Play It Again, Sledge

Directed by Bill Bixby. Bogart parody. Season two, episode three. Sledge got the shaft by the network, quality wise, in season two, to cut costs. This ep. is on Youtube at the moment. First aired Oct. 1, 1987.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0702673/

 The Maltese Falcon (1941)

A statue of a Maltese Falcon, just like the one from the 1941 version of the movie, is seen on Sledge's desk.

"Play it again, Sam" line reference and Humphrey Bogart look-alike
Play It Again, Sam (1972)

NBC Mystery Movie

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_NBC_Mystery_Movie

This is a nice image. Hard to keep track of all of the NBC Mystery Movie entries because they had a lot and often only a few episodes.  All covered here except for Quincy. Of the 500 plus TV shows I have watched in the last few years, the episode of The Snoop Sisters with Vincent Price and Roddy McDowall is probably my favorite. I watched all three episodes that are available on Youtube but that one has a horror theme. Alice Cooper is on another episode of The Snoop Sisters that is not online. About devil worshipers. Poor quality clip after the break.

Quincy, M.E.

1976-83. Part of the NBC Mystery Movie but it was an instant hit and quickly got its own slot. Found in the Kinja archive.

Contadina Pizzeria Kit

(5:30)  1985 pizza. At 10:07 there is also a Red Baron frozen pizza ad. Not many of those around.

And Then There Were None (1945)

Directed by Rene Clair. Agatha Christie. Kanopy library streaming service. Never seen this one either. The crucial thing with public domain black and white titles is to find a good print. Kanopy prints usually excellent.

The "Columbo" 50th Anniversary Show on Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast

https://soundcloud.com/gilbertgottfried/the-columbo-50th-anniversary

To mark the 50th anniversary of the series premiere of "Columbo," Gilbert and Frank are joined by author and pop culture historian David Koenig for a loving look at the iconic show, its mercurial star Peter Falk, its impressive lineup of guest killers and character actors and David's new book, "Shooting Columbo: The Lives and Deaths of TV's Rumpled Detective." Also in this episode: Bing Crosby takes a pass, Eddie Albert speaks his mind Steven Spielberg knocks it out of the park and Larry Cohen signs on as a "murder consultant." PLUS: Vito Scotti! The brilliance of Jack Cassidy! The genius of Levinson & Link! The debacle of "Mrs. Columbo"! Truman Capote "bumps off" Johnny Carson! The boys pick their favorite episode! And David reveals the truth (?) about Danny Kaye and Laurence Olivier!

The Ruthless Four (1968)

Directed by Giorgio Capitani. Spaghetti western. Van Heflin. Klaus Kinski. Italian Treasure of the Sierra Madre. You have to be careful with these Youtube versions. Hopefully some of these for the next two movies coming up will be passable.

Matalo! (1970)

Directed by Cesare Canevari. This is a weird one. Acid spaghetti western. I'm watching an Italian version in HD on Youtube because the English ones are crap. Almost no dialogue anyway. Rock score.

God, the Devil, and Bob

2000 NBC. Animated. James Garner, French Stewart, Alan Cumming. Only four aired out of 13 episodes. Looks like they are all on Youtube.

I remember none of these three new NBC series. Daddio and Battery Park the other two.
